Details of the accident:

Sea Land Youth Center, a three-story building located at Baekmi-ri, Seosin-myeon, Hwaseong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, caught fire on June 30, resulting in the death of 23 people, including 19 pupils of Somang Kindergarten in Munjeong-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul.

At around 01:35 hours, the flame, accompanied by an explosion, shot up at the blink of an eye and spread throughout the whole lodging building. A witness said, ¡°When I ran to Room 301 as soon as I heard the screams of children coming from there, I found it already filled with smoke.¡±

At around 02:30 hours, one hour after the fire broke out, 50 fire trucks from Suwon and Anyang came to the site to put out the fire and to try to save as many lives as they could. The building was very old, however, and the mobilization of the fire trucks was very much delayed, so that when the firemen arrived at the site, the whole building was already enveloped in flames. Most of the kids managed to get out of the building, but the pupils of Somang Kindergarten who had been sleeping in rooms 301 and 302 suffocated to death.
