At around 07:40 on October 21, 1994, Seongsu Bridge, which connects Seongsu-dong and Apgujeong-dong in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, collapsed. The 48m slab between the fifth and the sixth leg of the bridge collapsed, killing 32 people and injuring 17 who were on their way to their respective offices or schools.
Seongsu Bridge was the 11th bridge that was constructed over Han River. Its construction was started on April 9, 1977 and was completed two years and six months later, on October 15, 1979. It was a four-lane bridge with a width of 19.4 m and a length of 1,160.8 m.

Dongah Construction worked on the project, spending £Ü11.58 billion thereon. Unlike the existing bridges, which are oriented in their functions, it employed Gerber Truss engineering in consideration of beauty.
The investigation of the incident revealed the following: the joints of the trusses (steel structures) supporting the bridge slab were not fully welded; the welding thickness, which should be over 10 mm, was only 8 mm; and the connecting pins for the steel bolts were poor.
From April 26, 1995, Hyundai Construction set about the bridge recovery project with a £Ü78 billion budget, and on July 3, 1997, two years and eight months after the accident happened, vehicles were again allowed to pass through the bridge. |
