On Friday morning, October 21, 1994, at approximately 07:40 a.m., Seongsu Bridge, which connected Seongsu-dong and Apgujeong-dong in the Gangnam district of Seoul, collapsed. A 48m slab between the fifth and sixth legs of the bridge collapsed, killing 32 people and injuring 17 on their way to work or school.
Seongsu Bridge was the 11th bridge constructed over the Han River. Its construction began on April 9, 1977, and it was completed two years and six months later, on October 15, 1979. It was a four-lane bridge with a width of 19.4m and a length of 1,160.8m.

DongAh Construction carried out the project at a cost of 11.58 billion KRW. Unlike existing bridges, which were functionally-oriented, it was designed as a Gerber truss bridge for aesthetic reasons. The investigation of the incident revealed the following: the joints of the trusses (steel support structures) supporting the bridge slab were not fully welded; the welding thickness, which should have been at least 10mm, was only 8mm and the connecting pins for the steel bolts were faulty.
Starting on April 26, 1995, a bridge recovery project was undertaken by Hyundai Construction, with a budget of 78 billion KRW. On July 3, 1997, two years and eight months after the incident, vehicles were again allowed to cross the bridge. |
